Day 82 – Who’s Happy It Will Be 2011?

December 31, 2010

Location: Not Climbing a Mountain, El Chalten, Patagonia, Argentina

Date: Friday, December 31, 2010

Today, no mountains. No wacky weather. No flies.

Some days you have to get back to what you’re good at and if there’s one thing I’m good at it’s doing nothing but eat. So that’s what I did.

Unfortunately, El Chalten is in the middle of nowhere. You’re supposed to go to Laguna de Los Tres and get a closer view of what the hardcore mountain climbers are here for: Cerro Fitz Roy. You don’t come here for the food.

Well I sure as hell didn’t come to climb Fitz Roy and I wasn’t in the mood to see the other side of something I saw yesterday. So I made the best of it.

Which meant having waffles at a waffle place that wasn’t open for breakfast (I know because I tried). Don’t ask me. This is Argentina. They do things differently here. So differently that the waffles came with cabbage and lamb. Again, don’t ask.

I can’t say it was mind blowing, but it did manage to be weird even though the mix of meaty cordero and sweet waffles reminded me of chicken and waffles. Not bad. Just odd. Perhaps if they’d had some decent syrup.

Beyond that it was New Year’s Eve dinner at the only restaurant in town that had a free table. Apparently every tourist in town had made reservations ahead of time. Who knew?

Actually, it wasn’t even a free table. It was free seats in a booth that already contained two Germans and a Swiss. So you can basically say I crashed my first party.

So be it. The desert was good, the wine and beer flowed freely, and everyone went outside with a champagne glass at midnight to watch people try not to blow themselves up with do it yourself fireworks.

No mountain climbing. Decent weather. No monster flies.

Happy New Year.
